March 19, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The Camosun College Chargers golf team will be hitting the links against some of the best teams from BC and Alberta at the third annual Bear Mountain Collegiate Golf Tournament this weekend, March 23-24th.

Having won last year’s event with an epic 25-stroke lead, the Chargers aim to defend their title and start 2013 with a big win on their home course.

Developed by John Randle (Camosun College Chargers Head Coach and Academy Director at the Bear Mountain Resort) the tournament has gained popularity over the past few years and organizers are looking forward to another great event. Over the two days, 36-holes will be played with one round on each of the Valley and Mountain courses.

“Bear Mountain Resort is really pleased to be hosting this event once again,” said Coach Randle. “The course is in great shape and promises to be a great test.”

In total, 32 golfers representing five post-secondary schools are scheduled to swing into action this weekend starting on Saturday.

The 2012 CCAA National Championship Silver Medalist Chargers men’s team will tee-off against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks (2012 ACAC Gold Medalists), the Grant MacEwan Griffins (2012 ACAC Silver Medalists), the Vancouver Island University Mariners (2012 PACWEST Bronze Medalists) and the Douglas College Royals (who finished 6th in the PACWEST).

Also competing in the tournament is the Grant MacEwan Griffins women’s squad who won this year’s ACAC conference title and the VIU Mariners women’s team.

On the roster for Camosun are veterans Kevin Walz (Qualicum, BC), Jared Hundza (Edmonton, AB) and Brady Stead (Vernon, BC) as well as rookies Grant Maskiewich (Smithers, BC) and Kevin Bredy (Calgary, AB).

“It’s great to start the golf season with an event on our home course,” said Coach Randle. “We’ll see if the guys can defend their turf!”
