March 19, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The sixth race in the Frontrunners Island Race Series – Comox Valley RV Half Marathon – takes place on Sunday, March 24 at 11 am. The race starts and finishes at Florence Filberg Centre, 411 Anderton Avenue, Courtenay, and is hosted by the Comox Valley Road Runners.
Runners can register online until midnight, Wednesday March 20at www.vira.bc.ca, or on Saturday March 23 at Extreme Runners, 436 5th Ave, Courtenay, or on race day. Race registration until March 6 is $25 for adults and $20 for students. Race day fees are $35 and $30 for students.
Over 600 are registered to date for the race, which looks to see a battle between Geoff Martinson, who has won four of the Island Series to date, and Jim Finlayson, who is chasing the Canadian Master’s record. “This is one of the fastest courses in the country and a great place to set a PR,” says Race Director, Wayne Crowe. “Local masters Neil Holm and Vince Brotherston are expected to place highly, and there is a strong contingent coming from Edmonton including last year’s 50-54 winner Brian Stewart and 55-59 winner Greg Meiklejohn.”
New this year is the Comox Valley RV Race Weekend Pasta Party, to be held on Saturday, March 23 at the Florence Filberg Centre. Dinner is followed by keynote speaker Jim Finlayson, former Comox Valley RV Half winner and Masters record holder. Tickets can be purchased from http://www.eventsonline.ca/events/virs_tickets
After five races Prairie Inn Harriers lead the Island Series club standings, with Bastion Running Club second and Comox Valley Road Runners third.
Eight races make up the Frontrunners Island Race Series. Comox Valley RV Half Marathon will be followed by Merville 15K on April 7, and Sooke River 10K on April 21. The Comox Valley RV Half Marathon is part of the Timex BC Series. All races are sanctioned by BC Athletics. Registration is now online at www.vira.bc.ca.
