March 21, 2013, Central Saanich, BC (ISN) – The Boulders Climbing Gym in Central Saanich will be a busy place on March 30-31, 2013 as it hosts the first of three major climbing competitions that will be held at the facility this year – the Sport Climbing British Columbia (SCBC) Provincial Championships.

The BC Provincial Championships will feature the best youth climbers in the Province competing in a range of SCBC sanctioned categories including 11 and Under, 12/13, Youth B, Youth A, Junior and Open. There will also be competition in a number of non-sanctioned categories for all ages and abilities.

“We are extremely excited to be hosting the Provincial Championships,” says Boulders Board Chair Kimanda Jarzebiak in a release issued today. “The best of the best in the Province will be competing and no doubt a number will return to our facility later in the spring for the Nationals and again in August when we host the World Youth Championships.”

With over 13,000 square feet (1,208 square metres) of climbing space and the construction of a 60 foot (18-metre) high world class competition climbing wall that opened in late 2011, the Boulders Gym is the only facility of its kind in Canada and is quickly becoming noticed by the major sport climbing associations of the world. In addition to the Provincials, the Boulders will host the National Sport Climbing Championships on the May 2013 long weekend and have been selected by the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) to host the 2013 World Youth Championships August 15-19, 2013.

“Hosting both the Nationals and the World Championships is an incredible opportunity for us,” adds Jarzebiak. “We are the first facility in North America to be selected to host the World Youth Championships and given that the International Olympic Committee is very close to adding climbing as an official Olympic event, we expect an huge amount of national and international attention to be focused on our facility at both the Nationals and the Worlds in August.”

The SCBC Provincials begin with qualifying rounds from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm on Saturday March 30th, with finals in all events beginning Sunday March 31st at 9:30 am and finishing with the exciting speed finals at 12:30 pm. An award ceremony will follow at 1:30 pm. All spectators are welcome to attend free of charge.

Registration is still open for climbers who want to enter and will stay open until March 26, 2013. The fee is $80 plus HST and climbers can register and find more details at
