March 23, 2013, Portland, OR (ISN) – The Portland Winterhawks fired 58 shots at Everett Silvertips netminder Austin Lotz Friday, but fell 4-3 in Game 1 of the Western Hockey League playoffs at the Rose Garden in front of 9,390 fans.
The Hawks struck for the only goal of the first when Chase De Leo banged in a rebound in front of the net on a power play to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead at the 9:34 mark.
Early in the second Everett’s Cole MacDonald scored to even the game at 1-1 at the 3:07 mark, then the Silvertips went ahead 2-1 on a goal by Josh Winquist at the 17:05 mark, taking the lead into the third period.
Everett went ahead 3-1 when Kohl Bauml scored a power play goal 3:25 into the third. The Hawks got back within one at the 9:37 mark when Ty Rattie took a feed from Brendan Leipsic and fired a one-timer high over Lotz’s shoulder to cut it to 3-2.
Everett went back up by two when Bauml scored his second of the night at the 12:46 mark to make it 4-2. The Hawks then peppered Lotz with 22 shots in the third as they tried to rally. Late in the period with netminder Mac Carruth on the bench for an extra attacker, Nic Petan scored a power play goal with just over 16 seconds to go to make it 4-3, but that was as the close as the Hawks would get.
Lotz finished with 55 saves on 58 Portland shots. Carruth stopped 27 of the 31 shots Everett took.
Portland was 2-4 on the power play and a perfect 2-2 on the penalty kill.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow in Game 2 of the series at the Rose Garden.
