March 23, 2013, Edmonton, AB (ISN) – Stephane Legault had one of the all-time great WHL playoff performances as the Oil Kings took a 9-0 win over the Kootenay Ice on Friday.

Legault notched three goals and four assists to become only the sixth player in WHL history to post seven points in a single playoff game. With the win the Oil Kings took a 1-0 lead in their best of seven Eastern Conference Quarter Final Series.

Edmonton tore out of the gates with five unanswered first period goals including Legault’s hat trick. Legault’s seven points tied him with former WHL players Darryl Sydor, Dale Derkatch and David Kryskow for second in the WHL record book. He was only a single point behind Alfie Turcotte and Dave Chartier who each hold the record of eight points in a single playoff game.

Legault’s line mates Trevor Cheek and Michael St.Croix each had three point nights as did Oilers draft pick Martin Gernat. Cheek had a pair of goals and an assist to go with a plus-5 rating. 13 different Oil Kings players would find the score sheet with St.Croix, Travis Ewanyk, Cody Corbett and Keegan Lowe rounding out the Edmonton scoring.

Oil Kings goaltender Laurent Brossoit notched 28 saves to record his third career WHL playoff shutout. The MVP of the 2012 WHL Championship has a career playoff record of 17-6 with a 2.08 GAA and a 0.931 save percentage.

The Oil Kings power play was an impressive 3 for 7 on the night and the penalty kill was a perfect 5 for 5. Edmonton finished the 2012-13 regular season with the number one ranked power play and number two ranked penalty kill in the WHL.

The win was the most lopsided playoff victory in Oil Kings modern franchise history. The win eclipsed a 6-0 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings in the second round of the playoffs last year.
