Saturday, in the midst of the nordic and long track activity, Scott Russell marshals the Sports Weekend Panel, comprised of Olympians Perdita Felicien and Kristina Groves and MacLean’s journalist Jonathan Gatehouse. They’ll address revelations and disappointments among the athletes Canada is sending to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi next February. Scott will also engage ‘Own the Podium’, chief Anne Merklinger about the road ahead for Canada, with reference to its second-place ranking in World Championships and third-place showing in World Cup events over the past season.
CBC SPORTS WEEKEND is on the air at 3 p.m. ET/ 12 p.m. PT with cross country racing from Falun, Sweden. Other than a world Championships bronze medal by Pierre Harvey and a World Cup sprint bronze by Len Valjas, it’s been a disappointing season for Canada’s Nordic Knights, plagued by injuries and illnesses. Classical style races are featured Saturday with the pursuit freestyle races offered late night Sunday at 1 a.m. local times, 30 minutes past midnight in Windsor and Regina.
Canada’s long track speed skaters test the ice at Sochi’s Adler Arena in the Single Distances World Championships, led by 1,000-metre world record holder Christine Nesbitt (London, ON) and Edmonton’s Jamie Gregg in the men’s 500. The latter event, actually two races at that distance, is on tap for Sunday afternoon’s Sports Weekend, along with the team pursuit races. The show airs at 2 p.m. local time Sunday.
