March 22, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s rugby team is currently embroiled in a playoff battle that includes island rivals James Bay AA, top mainland competition Capilano RFC and Burnaby Lake RC.
In order to remain in contention, the Vikes must take the road win this weekend from UBCOB Ravens RFC.
With the top four teams making it into the playoffs, the No. 6 Vikes cannot afford a misstep. The last time these two sides met, the UBCOB Ravens refused to go down without a fight and although the Vikes took the win, the final score came up close at 18-13. The Vikes are currently 4-6 while the Ravens are 2-7-1.
“We need to win this game,” said Vikes assistant coach Rick Farrelly. “We’re not going to have another chance at these points and this is a pretty critical weekend for us. We made a few mistakes last week but we overall we played well so we need another effort like that.”
With sophomore Patrick Kay (Duncan, B.C.) once again donning the number 10 jersey alongside rookie scrumhalf James Pitblado, the Vikes are looking at a lineup of varied experience. However, with last week’s return of Adam Kleeberger (White Rock, B.C.), the Vikes have an added element of on-field leadership.
Additionally, as Beau Parker (Vancouver, B.C.) has cracked the league’s top three in scoring, he will continue to be an asset for the Vikes, working with fellow winger Luke McCloskey (Victoria, B.C.).
Although currently second from the bottom, the Ravens are not to be underestimated as kicker Patrick Watson has put up a number of points for the Vancouver side and try scorers Garrett Garbe and Garner Lea must be well-defended.
The UVic Vikes kick off against the UBCOB Ravens RFC tomorrow, Mar. 23, at 2:45 p.m. at Jericho Park.
