March 24, 2013, Portland, OR (ISN) – The Everett Silvertips were held to a season-low 11 shots on goal as the Portland Winterhawks played a sound puck-possession game on their way to a 4-1 victory over the ‘Tips in Game 2 of their first-round WHL playoff series Saturday night at the Rose Garden.

After gaining a split of the first two games in Portland, the Silvertips will return home with the series tied 1-1 going into Games 3 and 4 on Wednesday and Friday at Comcast Arena.

Josh Winquist scored the only Silvertips goal on a third-period powerplay, giving life to an Everett team which was limited to six shots over the first 50 minutes of play. The ‘Tips kept the game close throughout thanks in part to a 6 for 7 penalty killing effort and 30 saves in goal from Austin Lotz (1-1).

Neither team managed many shots in the early going before Portland struck first at 6:34. The play started when four Winterhawks jumped in the rush just after a great scoring chance for Everett, with Troy Rutkowski pushing in the rebound of Ty Rattie’s initial shot to put the ‘Hawks ahead 1-0. Portland then had four powerplay chances in the first period – including 90 seconds of 5-on-3 time – but the Silvertips killed off each one. Austin Lotz made another amazing save during the two-man disadvantage, lunging across the crease to glove Nic Petan’s point-blank chance to keep the score 1-0 after one.

Portland controlled the puck for most of the second frame and held Everett to a single shot on goal while generating nine shots of their own. The Winterhawks added to the lead at 8:04 of the period as 6-foot-5 Paul Bittner had Lotz screened in front of the net, allowing Shaun MacPherson’s wrist shot to sneak through traffic and in from the left point. The ‘Hawks held an 18-4 shot advantage and a 2-0 lead through 40 minutes.

Ty Rattie increased the lead to 3-0 at 6:43 of the third, breaking in free following an Everett turnover and lifting a quick shot into the top corner. The Silvertips countered on the powerplay just past the halfway point of the period as Josh Winquist crept in along the goal line and slipped his own rebound past Carruth to get Everett back within 3-1. The ‘Tips would get no closer as the game turned chippy in the last ten minutes, pushing the total penalty minutes issued over 100 for the night. Derrick Pouliot added a late powerplay goal to provide the final 4-1 margin for the ‘Hawks.

Mac Carruth (1-1) had a slow night with only ten saves in the victory as Portland finished with a 34-11 lead on the shot clock. The Silvertips scored once on four powerplay opportunities.
