March 24, 2013, Edmonton, AB (ISN) – The Oil Kings suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to the Kootenay Ice on Sunday at Rexall place.
Edmonton out-shot Kootenay 43-16 through the final 3 periods of play but were continually turned away by Ice goaltender Mackenzie Skapski who finished his night with an impressive 47 saves. The Ice tie the best-of-seven Eastern Conference Quarter Final at a game apiece with the next two games slated for Cranbrook on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.
Oil Kings goaltender Laurent Brossoit went save for save with the Kootenay goaltender through the first two periods of play. After a wide open Game 1, the Ice were able to slow the pace of the game with a stifling team defense. Brock Montgomery opened the scoring midway through the third with a tipped shot that managed to trickle over the shoulder of Brossoit for Kootenay’s first goal of the playoffs.
The Oil Kings finally drew even with a goal by Michael St. Croix just past the midway point of regulation time. Edmonton’s leading scorer in the regular season knocked in a puck out of mid-air to tie the game 1-1 with 7:59 to play in the third.
Stephane Legault’s playoff scoring continued as he notched the only assist on the St.Croix goal. Legault leads the WHL with eight points through the first two games of this series.
Multiple overtime opportunities by the Oil Kings culminated with flurry of action in the offensive zone. The entire line of St.Croix, Legault and Trevor Cheek were all turned away by Skapski who made 10 saves in the overtime period alone. A shot from an odd angle by Luke Philp gave the visitors a 2-1 victory with 3:04 left in the first overtime period.
The Oil Kings will now travel to Cranbrook, B.C. for Games 3 and 4 of this Eastern Conference Quarter Final. Game time for Game 3 is set for 7:00 p.m. MST on Tuesday, March 26th.
