March 24, 2013, (ISN) – Vancouver Island Baseball Institute hosted Opening Weekend at Serauxmen Stadium this weekend, and though they battled the Prairie Baseball Academy, came out with an 0-4 weekend.

Game 1

Final Score: VIBI 4 – PBA 5

A strong Opening Day crowd took in an entertaining game as the two teams went back and forth in the first game of the series. A scoreless game through two innings was broken up when PBA counted a run in the top half of the third to take a 1-0 lead, but it didn’t last long. With the bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning, Darren Kolk (Soph., Duncan, BC) drove a pitch out of Serauxmen Stadium to left field for a grand slam, giving VIBI a 4-1 lead.

The score remained until PBA leveled the game at 4 with three runs of their own in the fifth, and then would pull ahead for good with a run in the top of the seventh, arriving at the game’s final score. Connor Russell (Jr., Victoria, BC) started on the mound for VIBI, going 7 innings, allowing 4 earned runs on 8 hits and 6 walks, recording 5 strike outs.

Darren Kolk’s grand slam was the only scoring for VIBI, with Dallas Monk (Jr., Comox, BC) being the other offensive bright spot, going 3 for 4 with a run scored and a stolen base.

Game 2

Final Score: VIBI 4 – PBA 6 (10 innings)

In another tight contest, it was VIBI’s turn to play comeback in game two. PBA mounted a 4-0 lead through six innings before the comeback was cued. A double from Tyson Dyck (Fresh., Wymark, SK) drove in Darren Kolk and Cody Andreychuk (Soph., Nanaimo, BC) scored later in the inning to cut the PBA lead to 4-2.

Still needing two to tie, the VIBI bats found a pair of timely hits with two out in the ninth inning. First, it was a Jackson McCuaig (Soph., Victoria, BC) RBI single scoring Cody Andreychuk, then it was Jeremy Harasymchuk (Jr., Edmonton, AB) driving in Aaron Witzke (Jr., Lethbridge, AB) with the team down to their last strike, to send the game to extra innings.

PBA would pull ahead 6-4 in the top of the 10th, arriving at the game’s final score.

Cody Chartrand (Jr., Victoria, BC) took the start, going 5 innings, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits and 5 walks, recording 9 strike outs. Kolk, Andreychuk, and McCuaig had two hits apiece.

Game 3

Final Score: VIBI 3 – PBA 6

The early innings of game three had the same feel as the first two games, with the teams trading big innings. PBA tallied two runs in the first and third innings, around a three-run second inning for VIBI, leading to a 4-3 PBA led after three. That second inning for VIBI saw Aaron Witzke, Tim Scarr (Jr., Gibsons, BC), and Jeremy Harasymchuk each drive in a run.

Both starting pitchers settled in after the third inning however, with Reiley Grose (Jr., Wymark, SK) delivering scoreless frames until PBA pushed across three in the seventh inning to take the win. Only 3 of the 6 runs Grose would allow on the day were earned.

Game 4

Final Score: VIBI 2 – PBA 12

Game four saw PBA lead by just a run after four innings, but the wheels would fall off in a 7-run seventh for PBA that would break open a 12-2 PBA win, finishing the series sweep.

Dallas Monk was 3 for 4 and Ty Armstrong (Fresh., Ladysmith, AB) was 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored in the loss.

VIBI will now play a pair of non-conference doubleheaders at Serauxmen Stadium this week, before resuming conference play in the CCBC next weekend in Nanaimo. The Sherwood Park A’s provide the opposition for a 12 PM doubleheader on Monday, and the Edmonton Prospects are on the Island on Thursday for a 1 PM doubleheader.
