March 25, 2013, Prince George, BC (ISN) – The Prince George Spruce Kings of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) held their annual Players Award Banquet and handed out the team trophies on the weekend.

A total of fifteen including three new player trophies were awarded in front of over 200 players, staff, volunteers, friends and family members.

Trevor Esau was a multiple winner being presented with the newly founded Muchalla Family Bursary. The new award is a financial bursary presented to a player considered to embody all of the core values of the team. Former Spruce Kings captain and three year alumni, Sam Muchalla presented the award on behalf of his family.

Trevor Esau also won the newly created Steel Man of the Year trophy to acknowledge his selfless play blocking shots throughout the season. Esau finished the season with 254 blocked shots and another 25 in the postseason. The graduating three year veteran of the Spruce Kings also earned the Defenceman of the Year award and was a co-winner of the Playoff MVP trophy.

Coltyn Hansen was the other co-winner of the Playoff MVP and also claimed the Leading Scorer title and the other new award for the Plus/Minus Player of the Year with a plus rating of 16 in the regular season.

After sitting unpresented for one season, the CNC Challenge Cup was converted from a team trophy presented to the winner of the regular season series between the Quesnel Millionaires and the Prince George Spruce Kings after the Millionaires folded following the 2009-10 season.

Kirk Thompson earned the Regular Season MVP trophy after rewriting franchise records for minutes played in a season and in a career as well as for single season wins and career wins.

Other individual winners included Kevin Guiltinan (Most Inspirational), Cameron Lawson (Most Dedicated), Chad Staley (Most Improved), Karan Toor (Rookie of the Year), Bryant Christian (Seventh Player) and Jake LeBrun (Scholastic Player).

During the awards presentation, Bill van Helvoirt and Tom Baratta were also recognized as co-recipients of the annual Volunteer of the Year award. Both have worked for many seasons as minor officials in the scorekeepers box and recruiting new volunteers to perform the many duties that often go unrecognized behind the scenes leading up and during games.

Kirk Thompson, Trevor Esau, Coltyn Hansen and Shayne Morrissey were presented with their game worn jerseys and thanked for their contributions to the teams as graduating players with the Prince George Spruce Kings.
