March 26, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – Canadian Sport Institute is pleased to announce Dr. Trent Stellingwerff as the winning candidate in the search for an Innovation and Research Lead. Dr. Stellingwerff’s outstanding research experience, passion for sport innovation in applied sport sciences, and international research network make him a perfect fit for the position.

His work as a senior scientist at the Nestlé Research Center in Lausanne, Switzerland, along with his numerous published scientific journal articles and major international presentations give him all the qualifications needed for this important new role.

The Innovation and Research Lead position honours the legacy of the late Dr. Gord Sleivert by continuing his beloved work in the advancement of sport science research. The role will be the first of its kind in the country and will provide mentorship on sport-science service provision to the entire Performance Services staff, with close collaboration with university and industry partnerships, and thus, student and intern supervision.

Dr. Stellingwerff first joined the Canadian Sport Institute team as a Senior Physiologist in September 2011 and worked primarily with the sport of rowing. In September 2012 Trent stepped into a leadership role within the Institute as he assumed the role of Physiology Lead. “As we have seen through his great work in our physiology department, Trent has both the leadership and research skills needed to excel in this role,” explained Wendy Pattenden, CEO of Canadian Sport Institute. “I know Gord would have been excited about the projects we will be able to tackle through this new position. Having the chance to hire internally is also fantastic, as Trent will surely hit the ground running and be able to make an impact in the sector immediately.”

“I am honored to have been selected for this new position within our Institute,” commented Dr. Stellingwerff. “I believe this new role will help further our status as a world-leading sport institute. Along with our current outstanding sport science and medicine providers, my vision is to leverage our university and college partnerships to further provide innovative strategic performance advantages for our Canadian Olympic athletes. I love working with people, and I will continue to be a senior mentor and advisor to our sport science staff and key targeted Olympic and Paralympic sports.”
