Vikes Men and Women Fiinish Primm Battle

March 26, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – After three rounds of play at the par-72, 7131-yard Primm Valley Golf Club, the UVIC Vikes men’s golf team tied for tenth with Indiana’s Marian University.

With a team score of 891, in a field of 17 teams, the rookie-laden Vikes were 13 strokes shy of besting fellow Canadians the University of British Columbia as the T-birds carded 878, finishing ninth. Hosts Grand View University won the tournament with their team score of 848.

The best finish for the UVic men came from sophomore Jamie Cartwright (Canmore, AB) as his combined score of 221, after shooting a 74 in his third round, landed him tied for 31st on the leaderboard.

First-years Jesse Teron (Red Deer, AB) and Matthew Broughton (Victoria, BC) both tied for 42nd with 224 while rookie Sean Hay (Victoria, BC), despite yesterday’s hole-in-one, tied for 74th with 233 after a final round 82. Alex Cartwright (Canmore, AB) wrapped up his three rounds with a score of 235, number 78 on the leaderboard.

Next up for the UVic Vikes men’s golf team is a trip to Texas to compete in the AII Conference Championship, Apr. 29-30.

UVIC Women’s Golf Team

Fourth-year golfer Megan Woodland (Victoria, BC) carded a two-round score of 147 to come in second and lead the University of Victoria Vikes to a fourth-place finish at the 2013 Primm Battle hosted by the Primm Valley Golf Club.

On the par-72, 5938-yard course, Woodland broke even on day one and shot a 75 in her second round to wrap up the tournament in second place at plus three. Leading the field of 46 golfers, Wayland Baptist University’s Morgan Matchett carded a combined score of 142 (-2) to win the event.

The Vikes put up a team score of 624 to come in fourth, two strokes back of second-place University of British Columbia. It was CSU-San Marcos that took top honours with their score of 618.

Also boasting top-20 positioning on the leaderboard were Vikes Michaela Abey (Abbotsford, B.C.), Emily Nicol (Kelowna, BC) and Brynn Tomie (Bedford, NS). Abey shot an 81 in her second round to come in at 14th while Nicol carded 80 in her second round for 15th. Placing 20th was Tomie as she shot an 84 in her second 18.

Rounding out the Vikes contingent was Michaela Misener (Stanhope, PEI)with a 26th place finish after also shooting 84 in her second round.

Next up for the UVic Vikes women’s golf team is the Regional Championship in Houston, Tex., Apr. 29-30.
