March 27, 2013, (ISN) – Vancouver Island Baseball Institute resumes their home stand this weekend with a 4-game Canadian Collegiate Baseball Conference (CCBC) ries against the University of Calgary at Serauxmen Stadium in Nanaimo.
VIBI will be looking to get in the win column this weekend after playing the Prairie Baseball Academy close last weekend only to be swept on Opening Weekend at Serauxmen Stadium. Despite the outcome, three of the games could have gone either way, including a 5-4 PBA win in game 1, and an extra innings contest in game 2.
The schedule for this weekend is as follows:
Saturday, March 30:
12:00 PM vs. University of Calgary
2:30 PM vs. University of Calgary
Sunday, March 31:
11 AM vs. University of Calgary
1:30 PM vs. University of Calgary
Head Coach, Jordan Blundell saw several positives to build on this weekend:
On the mound, VIBI received strong starts from Connor Russell (Jr., Victoria, BC) and Reiley Grose (Jr., Wymark, SK), who both went 7 innings, allowing 4 and 3 runs respectively. Overall, Russell is 2-2 in 4 starts with a 2.90 ERA and 29 strike outs in 29 innings. Grose is searching for his first win (0-2) but is pitching well with a 3.15 ERA in 26.2 innings.
Offensively, shortstop Dallas Monk (Jr., Comox, BC) led the club, hitting .400 (6 for 15) on the weekend, while centerfielder Darren Kolk (Soph., Duncan, BC) provided maybe the biggest highlight of the weekend, blasting a grand slam in the third inning of game 1. On the weekend, Kolk hit .286 (4 for 14). First baseman Jackson McCuaig (Soph., Victoria, BC) was 3 for 8 with a .500 on-base % on the weekend.
Overall, Monk leads the team hitting .340, while Darren Kolk has been the offensive catalyst, leading the team in both steals, 10, and RBIs, 9.
