March 30, 2013 Victoria, BC (ISN) – The 2013 Ford World Men’s Curling Championship got underway on Saturday at Victoria’s Save On Foods Memorial Centre. Close to 3000 fans were on hand to watch the Opening Ceremonies and Draw 1, featuring Canada vs. China, Sweden vs. Finland, Czech Republic vs. Norway and Switzerland vs. Russia.

The tournament kicked off with British Columbian and former World Champion Greg McAulay throwing the first stone.

The Canadian rink of Brad Jacobs got out to a good start with a 7-6 victory over the strong Chinese rink of Rui Liu. After forcing China to take 1 in the 1st end, Canada took the lead scoring 2 in the 2nd, then adding singles in the 4th and 5th to stake a 4-1 lead.

China would get 1 back in the 6th, before Canada took what looked like a commanding lead with 3 in the 7th to go up 7-2, but China kept battling and scored 2 in the 8th, 1 in the 9th but were unable to complete the comeback scoring only 1 in the 10th to finish the game 7-6 in Canada’s favor.

Canada had a strong outing curling at 94% as a team, with skip Jacobs topping the field at 96%.

In other action, last weeks Victoria Curling Classic champions from Sweden got off to a slow start against Finland, trailing 4-0 after 4 ends before finding their groove.

Finland’s Aku Kauste lead 5-3 going into the 9th end, but a score of 4 by Niklas Edin’s rink gave then all they would need to secure a 7-6 win.

The Czech Republic’s Jiri Snitil knocked off Norway’s Thomas Ulsrud 8-5 and Switzerland’s Sven Michel downed Russia’s Andrey Drozdov6-4.

Round robin play continues throughout the week with playoffs and finals scheduled for next Saturday and Sunday.
