Schalk and Saxton win bronze medal at NORCECA

March 31, 2013, BOCA CHICA, Dominican Republic, (ISN) – Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., and Ben Saxton of Calgary won the bronze medal on Sunday at the second stop on the NORCECA (North and Central America and Caribbean) beach volleyball circuit.

They took the third place match in a walkover against compatriots Christian Redmann and Matt Zbyszewski of Toronto when the latter was unable to play due to a knee problem.

Mexico’s Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros picked up the men’s gold medal defeating Brad Keenan and John Mayer of USA-A 21-14, 21-17.

On the women’s side, Heather Bansley and Liz Maloney of Toronto took fourth spot losing the bronze medal match to Mexico’s Bibi Candelas and Martha Revuelta 15-21, 21-16, 15-10. Jamie Broder of Victoria and Kristina Valjas of Toronto were fifth.

In the final, USA’s Jennifer Fopma and Brooke Sweat won a thrilling match over compatriots Brittany Hochevar and Summer Ross 19-21, 21-17, 17-15.
