April 3, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – Swimming Canada’s flagship event of the year has arrived. Preliminary heat sessions begin at 10 a.m. – Heat finals will begin at 6:00 pm. Events will be held at the Saanich Commonwealth Place, Wednesday April 3 – Saturday April 6. Come on out and show your support!
The country’s best swimmers – 456 to be exact – have converged on Victoria to compete for spots on the national team at the Swimming Canada World Championships Trials.
Swimmers will compete in 40 events from Wednesday through Saturday. The fastest will represent Canada at this summer’s FINA World Championships in Barcelona from July 19 to Aug. 4. Teams for the World University Games and European junior tour will also be nominated.
Saanich Commonwealth Place will play host to the four-day meet, which features swimmers representing 109 clubs from nine Canadian provinces and the territory of Yukon.
This FINA-recognized qualifying meet will also feature guest competitors from the United States and as far away as Lithuania, Sweden, and Israel.
Canadian names to watch include Victoria native Ryan Cochrane, a two-time Olympic medallist looking to qualify in three events at his home pool. Fellow Victorian Alec Page, the youngest male on Canada’s 2012 Olympic swimming team, is among the up-and-coming talent on display. On the women’s side, Olympic finallists Martha McCabe, Brittany MacLean and Sinead Russell will take to the pool in an effort to return to the world’s highest
Preliminary heat sessions begin at 10 a.m. Pacific Time each day and admission is free to the public. Finals begin at 6 p.m. each evening. Tickets to finals are available for $10 per session at the door, or an all-events pass can be purchased for $30.
