April 4, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – With the top four teams in the BC Rugby Union’s CDI Premier League advancing to the playoffs, the No. 6 University of Victoria Vikes must win their next three games in order to keep their post-season hopes alive.

This weekend the Vikes take on the Meraloma RC, a team currently occupying the fourth and final playoff spot.

Last weekend the VIkes played the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds for a chance at winning their 16th consecutive Wightman’s Boot title. With a scoreline of 39-15 the Vikes were successful at adding another victory to their already impressive 38 in comparison to UBC’s 17.

Going into this Saturday’s match the Vikes post 24 points in the league standings in comparison to the Meraloma’s 32. The last time these two sides met, back in September, UVic was bested 27-5 with the lone try coming from winger Kane Wyatt.

With the return of veteran scrumhalf Phil Mack, the Vikes are certainly liking their chances. Absent thus far due to an injury sustained in international competition, the talented playmaker could be just what the Vikes have been missing.

U-20 Team Canada standout Patrick Kay, at flyhalf, has demonstrated his ability to remain consistent despite pressure from the opposition and has done well to create space for wingers Beau Parker and Kane Wyatt. With Parker as the team’s leading try scorer the Vikes will need the third year to continue to his winning ways. Additionally, centres Remi Anctil and Dustin Dobravsky will play key roles in keeping the Vikes’ defensive structure intact.

The Vikes kick off against the Meralomas this Saturday, Apr. 6, on Wallace Field at 2:45 p.m.
