Story by Kelly Miller-Gerlach Editor (ISN) Files from (JDFMHA)
April 9, 2013, Juan de Fuca Minor Hockey (JDFMHA) Peewee player and local BMX’er, Brett Cunard, age 11 years old was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in February of 2013. Brett has had 2 prior surgeries, the first surgery was November, 2012 to remove an enlarged Lymph node from his neck.
The second surgery took place in January of 2013 when they biopsied Brett’s chest area, with the results coming back positive.
Brett has been a real trooper through every surgery and chemo session he has had to date. Brett started his battle and chemo sessions in mid – February. Brett has been scheduled for 6-9 more months of chemotherapy at the Vancouver Children’s Hospital. Sarah, Brett’s mother is a single parent and is not alone thanks to the JDFMHA, Westshore Community and surrounding areas who have joined in the fight to battle this horrible disease.
On February 24, 2013, the JDFMHA hosted a Bottle Drive and Bake Sale at Western Speedway in the Western Communities, raising close to $15,000.00. It was a wonderful day as the community came together, making this the largest Bottle Drive the Depot has ever experienced in a single day!
The Log-House Pub, hosted a Silent Auction, Beer and Burger night on Wednesday March 23, 2013. The event was a huge success and may have raised close to $14,000.00, all proceeds will go to help the family with expenses. A special thank you goes out to the community who has really come together to show their support and join in the fight.
Easter weekend, the JDF Peewee team travelled to Powell River for a year end hockey tournament. After contacting Rick Hopper for entry into the tournament, Rick was advised of our Peewee player’s situation and future battle with the disease. It did not take Rick long to set up a table at the tournament to supply lunches for players and their families. All donations and money raised at the lunch table was donated to support “Brett’s Fight”.
Powell River host teams had items that were bought, donated and made available to the players and families for the lunch table at the arena, many creative minds and busy hands were involved to make this a huge success. Another table was set up to sell tournament logo hats and hoodies, with all proceeds going to help the family through this difficult time.
The Powell River Minor Hockey Association was truly amazing in showing their compassion and support towards Brett and his family.
Brett is now on his way to the Children’s Hospital for his third round of chemotherapy, the treatments have been very difficult for Brett and has taken a tole on his system. Every day is a fight, our thoughts and prayers go out to Brett and his family.
Let us show Brett and his family they are not alone in this battle – “Brett’s Fight is Our Fight”. You can still make contributions at the following location.
