April 12th, 2013, Victoria, BC – As the Victoria Mariners get set to begin the 2013 baseball season, we are quickly reminded of how precious a day at the ball park can be. For one Mariner it is even more precious.
Zach Downey was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in October of 2012 and began treatment in early November at Vancouver’s Children’s Hospital.Early signs indicate that Zach has a real chance of beating this disease. His age, attitude, fitness and support from family and friends will go a long way in his fight.
Zach completed his 6th round of Chemotherapy treatments in March and is hoping to return home by the summer. While Zach won’t be lacing up his cleats and grabbing his glove for the Mariners this season, he will be on the field in spirit and if he is up to a trip to the ballpark, will be a very welcome sight and big inspiration to all his teammates.
You can help the Downey family through this tough time. They have incurred significant expenses throughout the battle and the Mariners have organized several fundraising initiatives to help them out.
If you would like to help Zach and his family out you can:
– Donate in person at any Coast Capital Savings branch. The fund name is Zach Downey and the member number is 7029363.
– Donate any bottles you have by heading down to the Bottle Depot were an account has been set up in Zach’s name. Head to any of their Greater Victoria locations and ask to have the proceeds deposited in the Zach Downey account.
As the sun begins to shine and the players take the field our thoughts and prayers will be going out to Zach and his family in these difficult times.
UPDATE: Zach will be throwing out the first pitch as the Premier Mariners begin their 2013 season on Saturday at Henderson Park at 12:00.
