April 13, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The Victoria Mariners and Parksville Royals took to the field at Henderson Park for the Mariners home opening game of the 2013 British Columbia Premier Baseball League season on Saturday. Typical April weather in Victoria caused the cancellation of the game after 6 ½ innings with the score knotted at 1-1.

The day started out in fine form for Victoria as teammate Zach Downey, who is undergoing cancer treatment, was on hand to throw out the first pitch and cheer the Mariners on. Zach threw a perfect strike right down the middle.

Victoria would open the scoring in the bottom of the 3rd when Jesse Mycock, who had already stole 2nd base, would steal 3rd base then score after the throw from catcher Katsuhiro Ono went awry.

The score remained 1-0 Mariners until the top of the 6th when Justin Dieleman hit for a single that scored Sam Visona from 2nd base.

The Royals loaded the bases in the 7th with 1 out but as the skies opened up they were unable to cash in a run and the game was called due to weather with 6 ½ innings played.

The teams will finish the game next time they meet and have to make up game two of the series at a yet to be determined date.

Mariners Chris Fougner and Royals T.R. Doty both hit for doubles while Wood went 5.1 innings allowing just the 1 run off 2 hits with 9 strikeouts and 3 walks.

Both teams are back in action tomorrow, weather permitting, with the Royals at home in Parksville to the Victoria Eagles while the Mariners host the Whalley Chiefs at noon at Henderson Park.
