April 17, 2013, Ottawa (ISN)- Abbotsford, B.C., Sherbrooke, Que., Regina, Calgary and Edmonton are all ready to host the Canadian Open volleyball championships which start next month.
The 2013 edition features a record 9,000 players from 758 teams ranging in age from 13 to 18. Approximately 86 percent of the participants are women. This is the highest number of female athletes for this age group in a sport in Canada.
The first tournament is the 14U, 15U and 16U Canadian East Open set for Sherbrooke from May 3-5. A total of six venues will host matches including l’Université de Sherbrooke and CEGEP de Sherbrooke.
The following weekend, May 10-12, two tournaments are being held: the 14U Canadian West Open at the Tradex Exhibition Centre in Abbotsford and 17U and 18U Canadian Open at the GO Centre and Butterdome in Edmonton.
Finally on the weekend of May 18-20, the 15U Canadian West Open is set for Credit Union Eventplex and Co-Operators Centre in Regina and the 16U Canadian West Open is at the Olympic Oval in Calgary.
The first Canadian open took place in 1997 and attracted 122 teams. Volleyball Canada projects that by 2016 more than 1,000 teams totaling 12,000 players will be competing at the Canadian Open.
