April 16, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The last race in the Frontrunners Island Race Series – Sooke 10K – will take place on Sunday, April 21 at 11 am.
The race will start and finish at Edward Milne School, 6218 Sooke Rd, and is hosted by the Island Road Racers. The Island Series awards will follow the race.
Runners can register online until midnight, Wednesday April 17 at www.vira.bc.ca, at Frontrunners, 1200 Vancouver St. on Saturday April 20, or on race day. Race registration until April 17 is $25 for adults and $20 for students. Race day fees are $35 and $30 for students.
“We have over 470 registered, including 331 who registered for the whole series,” says Ken Chew, Race Director. “We expect Merville winner Nick Walker to be a top contender, and we have a wide open women’s field.”
In light of the tragedies at the Boston Marathon, the race will be preceded by a minute’s silence. “Leading into our last race of the Island Series, I know that we are all very thankful to be able to participate in such a beautiful part of the world,” says Cathy Noel, President of VIRA. “We all run for different reasons whether it is in a race or on our own, but wherever we run, our thoughts will take us to those who have lost their lives, or been injured at the Boston Marathon.”
After seven races Prairie Inn Harriers lead the Island Series club standings, with Bastion Running Club second and Comox Valley Road Runners third. Geoff Martinson and Jen Millar lead the individual standings.
The Frontrunners Island Race Series is sanctioned by BC Athletics. Historical results from races dating back to 1980 from previous race series can be seen on www.pih.bc.ca
