Paul Eby – Women’s Match Report; Written by Oli Scott
April 16, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The Valkyries found another gear on Saturday disposing of SFU quite handily, with a number of players upping their game.
The first ten minutes saw the visitors with all the possession but good harrying in defence as usual kept SFU from breaching Velox’s lines. Shortly after, the first scrum of the day set the tone for the afternoon as the pack rumbled forward leaving clean ball for the backs to execute a fine set piece putting Jessie Wallace into space to finish off a textbook two on one.
Great continuity and offloading out of tackles from the forward pack kept Velox on the front foot all afternoon, Brittany Sims, Kelsey Rae, Karen Battie and Chelsey Minter having a particularly great day at the office. With a new centre pairing of Monique Boag and Sam Robb the Valkyries are beginning to look dangerous with ball in hand, which coupled with the usual rock solid defence made for a very comfortable victory. Courtney Sims is growing into the #10 jersey with each game and Selina McGinnis made a comeback from injury with a try from full back.
A win against Uvic this weekend is needed to guarantee a home semi final.
This Saturday, the women host UVic in their last regular season match (11:30am). The Valhallians have finished 1st in the regular season in the Cowichan Cup competition, earning a bye in the first round of playoffs this weekend. According to the schedule, the Academy would have a playoff game this weekend but I haven’t gotten any confirmation that such a game will happen.
Sunday, the 3rds host CW in an Island semi-final (1pm).
This Thursday night is the Annual General Meeting for the club, starting at 8pm. All club members are invited to come by, hear reports on the last year, and vote on executive positions for the coming year. We do have a theme this year which is “Rugby Meets Hollywood”…so there may be a few twists.
Front Row Club
If you’ve been playing prop or hooker for Velox for two or more seasons, you could be eligible for a Front Row Club mug (awarded at the banquet). If you’d like to be considered, talk to one of the senior front row players at the club and explain to them why you are deserving….
