April 15, 2013, Kamloops, BC (ISN) – Vancouver Island Baseball Institute was unable to build on their success of a week ago, as they were swept in a four-game series at Norbrock Stadium in Kamloops this weekend.
The series consisted of a pair of games each against Thompson Rivers University and Okanagan College.
Final Score: VIBI 5 – Okanagan College 6 (10 innings)
Connor Russell (Jr., Victoria, BC) was handed the ball for the first game of the weekend, and it was looking good early on, as Okanagan scored 1 in the first but it was countered by 3 in the fourth as VIBI took the 3-1 lead. Ty Armstrong (Fresh., Ladysmith, BC) drove in Cody Andreychuk (Soph., Nanaimo, BC) as part of the big inning.
Okanagan responded with a big inning of their own, cashing 4 in the fifth inning to take a 5-3 lead, but that lead was short lived, as VIBI would come right back with a pair of their own in the top of the sixth to tie it at 5. Andreychuk drove in Darren Kolk (Soph., Duncan, BC) and later scored on a passed ball in the inning.
Pitching for both sides would settle in from there, as the 5-5 score held from the top of the sixth all the way through until the bottom of the tenth. Connor Russell went 8 innings, allowing 5 runs, just 1 earned, on 5 hits and 4 walks with 9 strikeouts.
Okanagan took advantage of their second straight chance to walk off with the win, taking the walk-off win on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the tenth.
Luke Hawkins (Soph., Victoria, BC) went 1.1 in relief for VIBI, allowing an unearned run and 2 hits.
Darren Kolk was 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored in the loss.
Final Score: VIBI 7 – Thompson Rivers University 8
Another back and forth affair saw VIBI give TRU all they could handle, ultimately falling just short.
The game got off to a good start, with a 2-0 lead after half an inning, after Jeremy Harasymchuk (Jr., Edmonton, AB) scored on a Darren Kolk triple, who was then driven in by Cody Andreychuk in the 2-run first.
TRU battled back with runs in each of the first and second to send the game tied at 2 into the fourth inning, when VIBI would again reclaim the lead when an Aaron Witzke (Jr., Lethbridge, AB) RBI single scored Jackson McCuaig (Soph., Victoria, BC).
The 3-2 lead was expanded in the fifth, when Tyson Dyck (Fresh., Wymark, SK) would double in Dallas Monk (Jr., Comox, BC) and Darren Kolk, giving VIBI the 5-2 lead.
Things were looking good for VIBI, up three headed to the sixth, but TRU then showed why they are the CCBC leaders, scoring 5 runs from the sixth through the eighth innings, taking a 7-5 lead to the ninth. Harasymchuk and Kolk would both reach to lead off the top of the ninth, and came around to score as VIBI sent this game to the bottom of the ninth tied at 7.
But TRU was not going to be stopped, scoring a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth, handing VIBI their 2nd walk-off loss of the day.
Aaron Witzke was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs in the loss. Tyson Dyck was 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs, and Darren Kolk was 2 for 5 with an RBI and 3 runs scored.
Cody Chartrand (Soph., Nanaimo, BC) started on the mound, going 6 innings, allowing 4 runs on 8 hits, walking 3 and striking out 3.
Final Score: VIBI 4 – Thompson Rivers University 6
The difficult weekend continued on Sunday morning, as TRU took charge of this game early, building a lead VIBI could not come back from.
TRU started fast, scoring 2 runs in each of the first two innings, adding another in the third as they built a 5-1 lead. VIBI added a run in the fourth to make it 5-2, but that run was counted in the sixth to re-establish the 4-run lead for TRU. VIBI showed some fight, scoring a pair in the top of the seventh to close the gap to 2, but the door was slammed there.
Cody Andreychuk was 2 for 3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored in the loss, Chad Schultz (Soph., Swift Current, SK) was 2 for 3 with a run scored, and Tyson Dyck was 1 for 3 with an RBI.
Final Score: VIBI 2 – Okanagan College 12 (6 innings)
A difficult weekend came to an unceremonious end, as the weekend sweep was completed with a mercy-rule loss to Okanagan.
Okanagan started early with 2 in the first, but both sides would post scoreless frames from there until the fourth. VIBI looked to get back into it when Ty Armstrong drove in Darren Kolk in the top of the fourth to cut the lead in half, but the wheels fell off shortly thereafter.
Up 2-1 entering the bottom of the fourth, Okanagan scored 5 in the fourth, 2 in the fifth, and 3 in the sixth to take the mercy-rule win after 6 innings.
