April 17, 2013, Central Saanich, BC (ISN) – Robert Stewart-Patterson and Elan Jonas-McRae, two climbers who train at the Boulders Climbing Gym in Central Saanich, recently returned from the U.S. Sport Climbing Series (SCS) Sport and Speed Climbing Open National Championships in Colorado, where they had impressive performances, placing 4th and 6th overall in their respective events.
17-year old Stewart-Patterson placed 4th in the Speed Climbing event, while 18-year old Jonas-McRae placed 6th overall in the Lead or Difficulty Climbing event. The results follow on their respective victories in the same events at the 2013 Sport Climbing British Columbia Provincials that were held on the March 30-31 weekend at the Boulders Climbing Gym in Central Saanich.

Their accomplishments are notable as the Colorado event was an “Open” competition, meaning that both athletes were competing against the best adult climbers from across the U.S.
“We are extremely proud of their accomplishments at the U.S. Nationals,” noted Kimanda Jarzebiak, Director of Operations at the Boulders and a coach for both climbers. “It was excellent preparation for them and gives them more exposure to the type of competition they will face at the upcoming Canadian Nationals in May and at the World Youth Championships in August.”

The Canadian National Climbing Championships will be held at The Boulders Climbing Gym on the Victoria Day long weekend, May 17-20, 2013. Both Stewart-Patterson and Jonas-McRae will be competing along with other top climbers from across Canada and the United States.
The International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) World Youth Championships are also being hosted by The Boulders Climbing Gym and will take place August 15-19, 2013. This will be a world class event that will be attended by the best youth climbers from around the world and that will garner the attention of the International Olympic Committee, as sport climbing has been short-listed as an event at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
As evidenced by it being short-listed as a possible Olympic game, climbing is growing rapidly in popularity around the globe. The SCS Nationals in Colorado attracted a crowd of over 1,000 spectators and at least that many are expected to attend the Canadian Nationals at The Boulders in May, while up to 3,000 spectators are anticipated to be at the World Youth Championships in August.
