April 18, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – Dani Sinclair was introduced as the new head coach of the University of Victoria Vikes women’s basketball team on Thursday.

Sinclair, a former Vikes product of long-time head coach Kathy Shields, is no stranger to the program that boasts nine national titles. A former CIS national champion with the Vikes and Athlete of the Year at McMaster University, Sinclair brings a wealth of knowledge both as a decorated athlete and an experienced coach.

“I am delighted that our hiring process has affirmed Dani as our women’s basketball coach,” said Clint Hamilton, director of Vikes Athletics and Recreation. “She has worked incredibly hard to prepare herself to lead our program and I have every confidence that she will succeed in building our women’s basketball program to the level she contributed to and enjoyed as a player at UVic.”

A native of Guelph, Ont., Sinclair is a National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) level three coach and graduated from UVic with a bachelors degree in Education.

Sinclair’s coaching history with the Vikes women extends back to 2006, when she first joined the Vikes as an assistant coach. Working under previous head coaches Brian Cheng and Rich Chambers, Sinclair has been apart of the evolving championship history that is the Vikes women’s basketball program.

Following a year working under coach Chambers, where the Vikes went 8-10 in regular season play, Sinclair stepped in as associate coach to guide the Vikes to an impressive 16-6 record in 2012-13. The Vikes women qualified for the post season and showed an impressive spirit that is likely to be the fuel for the start of the 2013 season.

“There is a tremendous history of leadership and excellence in the Vikes basketball program,” said Sinclair, following the announcement. “There have been a number of great, accomplished coaches that have gone through this program – all very exceptional leaders, teachers and people. It’s truly an honour to have the opportunity to take this team into the future and be the next leader of this program.”

When not with the Vikes, Sinclair is the head coach of Basketball B.C.’s Vancouver Island Training Center and the head coach of B.C.’s Under-15 girls provincial team. In October of 2011, Sinclair travelled as the assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

“As a former Vike in women’s basketball, I am very proud to see another aluma take the lead”, said Tracie Sibbald, a member of the UVic Alumni Board of Directors and a member of the hiring committee. “Dani has great experience coaching at the CIS level and she brings a good energy to the team. She is a strong leader and a role model for these young women.”
