Gernat Signs NHL Entry Level Contract

April 20, 2013, Edmonton, AB (ISN) – The Edmonton Oil Kings are proud to congratulate Slovakian defenseman Martin Gernat on signing his NHL entry level contract with the Edmonton Oilers.

The Oilers selected the versatile defenseman with their fifth round pick, 122nd overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. The Oil Kings then made Gernat their first round pick, 18th overall in the 2011 CHL Import Draft.

“It’s a great feeling and it’s a big step for me to get to the next level now” said Gernat “All kids have dreams of being part of the NHL and now I am almost there and I am trying to make the big league”

Gernat had an exceptional WHL rookie season in 2011-12. In 60 games, he finished seventh in WHL rookie scoring and first in WHL rookie scoring amongst defencemen with 55 points. He finished fifth in the WHL and led all Oil Kings in plus/minus with a +41 rating. The native of Kosice, Slovakia registered one goal and nine shots in six games for Team Slovakia at the 2012 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship.

In an injury shortened 2012-13, Gernat posted 13 points in 23 games with a plus-8 rating. He just registered a 4-point night with a pair of power play goals and 2 helpers in Game 2 of the 2013 WHL Eastern Conference Championship.

Gernat and the Oil Kings will be back in action next week. Games 3 and 4 of their best-of-seven series against the Calgary Hitmen will be played in Calgary on Tuesday and Wednesday. The entire 2013 Husky WHL Eastern Conference Championship series between the Edmonton Oil Kings and Calgary Hitmen will be televised LIVE on SHAW on Channel 304 and SHAW Direct Channel 299 throughout Western Canada.
