April 21, 2013, Victoria, BC – The Velox Valkyries finished the 2013 British Columbia Rugby Union Women’s Adidas Premiership regular season in fine form on Saturday defeating the UVic Vikes 42-12 and securing home field advantage in the playoffs.

The Valkyries, who were resting some battered bodies and were also kind enough to lend the services of Marlene Donaldson, Frédérique Rajotte and Jessie Wallace to the shorthanded Vikes, got on the board early in the first half when Davine Burton plunged over the line for the opening try and the honor of being this year winning try scorer in the annual Player Lottery won by Mike Holmes.

The teams would battle it out the rest of the way with Velox getting tries from Sam Robb, Brittany Sims, Courtney Sims, Lydia Toorenburgh and Lynzi Anderson with 3 while Monique Boag connected on 1 conversion. Scoring for UVic were Marlene Donaldson with a try and Kara Galbraith with a try and conversion.

The win vaulted Velox into 1st place and home field advantage in next weekend’s matchup with 4th place SFU. 2nd place United Rugby Club will host 3rd place Burnaby Lake RFC with the winners advancing to the Provincial Championship May 11.
If Velox and Burnaby Lake make it through the Semi Finals it will mark the 3rd year in a row these two teams have met in the Finals.

In 2011 Burnaby Lake score in the dying seconds to take home the Harris Memorial Trophy and in 2012 the Valkyries looked to be in fine shape until a 2nd half surge from Burnaby tightened the score but some savvy play from the Velox veterans put an end to the comeback and secured the Valkyries victory.

Make no mistake this isn’t the same team as last year, they have there own identity and they will be looking to put their mark in the British Columbia Rugby Union history books as repeat Champions.
Head on down to Velox field next Saturday at 11:30 and cheer on the Valkyries as they challenge for a berth in the Provincial Championship.
