Saskatchewan student-athletes to represent Canada in shooting

April 26, 2013, Ottawa (CIS) – Canadian Interuniversity Sport announced Friday the student-athletes and team leader who will represent Canada in shooting at the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia (July 6-17).

An all-Saskatchewan squad is set to wear the Maple Leaf at the 27th summer world university games. All three Canadian competitors are University of Saskatchewan students and hail from the Prairie province, including Kelsey Bjorkman of Fenton, as well as Christine King and Jeremy Gyoerick, both from Prince Albert.

Another Saskatchewan native, Lisa Borgerson of Rockglen, returns to the Universiade in the role of team leader. She was an assistant coach in 2011 in Shenzhen, China.

Bjorkman and King will both compete in the women’s 25-metre pistol and 10m air pistol events in Russia, while Gyoerick will line up in the men’s 25m standard pistol, 25m rapid fire pistol, 50m pistol and 10m air pistol tournaments.

Gyoerick will make his second trip to Kazan in less than a year. He took part in the FISU world university championships last September, achieving personal best performances in the rapid fire pistol thanks to a score of 531 and in the standard pistol with a total of 545.

This will mark Canada’s third participation in the sport at the Universiade, after 2011 in China and 2007 in Bangkok, Thailand. Lea Wacowhich of Redwater, Alta., holds the best Canadian result to date with a 17th-place finish in the women’s 10m air pistol in 2007.
