April 28, 2013, Nananaimo BC (ISN) – The Western Canada Cup kicked off on Saturday afternoon with the Brooks Bandits taking on the Surrey Eagles at Frank Crane Arena in Nanaimo.

There were 906 fans on hand and they were treated to a bit of a slow opening period, before Brooks Brandon Bruce finally put a puck past Eagles goaltender Michael Santaguida at 18:27. The second period would see Surrey take 2 untimely penalties, and the Bandits would capitalize on the Powerplay at 6:02 and 7:30 on goals by Mark Reners, and RJ Reed.

The Bandits goaltender Michael Frederick stood tall in the 2nd frame holding Surrey scoreless. Early on in the third period, Brady Shaw would get Surrey on the board at 3:08 on the Powerplay. Shaw had been snakebit on the day having numerous opportunities turned away by Frederick.

Brooks managed to extend their lead back to 3 goals when Captain Cam Maclise got hauled down on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot. Maclise would make no mistake going 5-hole on Santaguida. At 19:00, the Eagles would get another on the board as Drew Best scored from Brett Mulcahy.

Players of the Game – Surrey #5 Brady Shaw, Brooks #1 Michael Frederick.
