Queen’s-McGill Rowing Challenge

KINGSTON, Ont. — The Queen’s Gaels men’s and women’s rowing teams hosted the 17th annual Queen’s-McGill Challenge Boat Race on the Cataraqui River, Sunday morning, at the Kingston Rowing Club where the Gaels outperformed their historic rivals from McGill to take the overall points title 9-3.

It was the first overall title for Queen’s since 2011 and the victory improved their record against McGill to 10-7 overall for the Lorne Gales Challenge Cup, which is the Canadian equivalent of the Oxford-Cambridge race in England and the Harvard-Yale competition in the United States.

Queen’s won six of the eight events, including all four women’s events, two from the novice team and both from the varsity Gaels.

In the women’s division, Queen’s swept all four events, including both varsity heavyweight races and a pair of novice races, to outscore McGill 6-0 and take home the Challenge Trophy for 12th time since it was first presented in 1999. It was the Gaels first victory since 2011.

Two points are awarded for a varsity victory and one point for a novice win.

On the men’s side, the men’s novice four from McGill took both of their races but the Gaels varsity eight team returned the favour beating McGill in both of their races to claim the Challenge Blade Trophy for the third straight year and the 10th time since it was first presented in 1997.

During the award ceremonies, Queen’s also honoured former Gaels rower and Olympian Morgan Jarvis, who made his Olympic debut in the men’s lightweight double sculls event with partner Douglas Vandor, a McGill grad, and finished 14th at the 2012 Summer Games in London.

“Another successful Queen’s-McGill regatta, it is a proud tradition between these two schools for 17 years now,” said Jarvis. “With two of the best rowing teams to be a part of in the country, it just makes this a proud tradition to be a part of.”

The Queen’s rowing team honoured the Gaels alumnist by dedicating a boat after the Olympian who was on hand to accept the honour. Two years ago Vandor also had a boat dedicated to him on the McGill campus.
