April 27, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) It was a good opening day for the 2013 season as the Intermediate ‘A’ and Jr. ‘A’ Shamrocks each gained a victory over the New Westminster Salmonbellies Saturday.
The Intermediates led 3-2 after 1 in what looked like it was to be a tight defensive battle but opened up an 8-5 lead after 2 periods, taking home a 12-8 victory. Leading the way offensively for the Shamrocks was Matt Hamilton with 3 goals and 1 assist. Nick Preston and Nate Wade each picked up 2 goals and 1 helper while Cole Pickup contributed 3 assists. Trace Birley was solid in goal with 27 saves.
The Jr. Shamrocks had a tougher time with their counterpart Salmonbellies although they led 9-4 after 2 periods. The visitors clawed back and Victoria needed a goal and at 16:32 came away with an 11-10 win. Rookie Max Fredrickson had the hat trick and 2 assists offensively, while Chris Wardle had a 6-point night on a goal and 5 helpers.
Devon Casey and Jake Cullen had a pair of goals. New West outshot the Shamrocks by a 57-39 margin, meaning Cody Hagedorn had to be outstanding in goal which he was, especially in the closing seconds with the Bellies bearing down.
The Jr. Rocks are on the road Sunday to face the Coquitlam Adanacs and don’t return home to Bear Mountain until the weekend of May 11-12 with two home games
