Weather delays limit Vikes men to one round on opening day

April 30, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s golf team were limited to one round of play on the opening day of the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference championship.

The three-round tournament is being hosted Apr. 29-30 at the Victoria Country Club in Victoria, Texas.

Despite the weather challenges, the Vikes did complete their first round and currently sit in fifth place with a team score of 305 (+17). California State-San Marcos are on the leader board with 294 (+6), while hosts, Houston-Victoria, are in second with 302 (+14). The Vikes are nine strokes ahead of sixth placed SUNY Delhi (314, +26).


Leading the Vikes men are Jesse Teron and Jamie Cartwright. The Vikes pair are tied for seventh, each with a score of 75 (+3) on the 6,870-yard course. One stroke behind them is local rookie Matthew Broughton (76, +4), who finished 13th after round one. Fellow rookie Alex Cartwright finished 25th (79, +7), while Sean Hay tied for 29th (81, +9).

Second-round play will be postponed to tomorrow, Apr. 30, along with the third round play, with the first tee-off going at 10:30 a.m. PDT.

The UBC Thunderbirds, who are currently tied for third after round one (303, +15), are the two-time defending champions and are in contention for a three-peat. The overall individual winner and team champions will be guaranteed berths to the 2013 NAIA national championship, hosted May 14-17 in Salem, Ore.
