April 30, 2013, Edmonton, AB (ISN) – The Edmonton Oil Kings will have a chance to defend their league title in the 2013 WHL Championship Series.

The Oil Kings defeated the Calgary Hitmen 2 – 0 in Game 7 of the Husky Eastern Conference Championship to capture their second straight Conference crown. Michael St. Croix scored a pair of goals including his team-leading 10th of the playoffs in a game controlled from almost start to finish by the home side in front of 10,738 faithful junior hockey fans.

Michael St. Croix was named the series MVP with 4 goals and 6 assists in the 7 game series and was only held off the score sheet once versus the Hitmen.

“There’s something about the home crowd here and the fans really help us,” said St. Croix who surpassed his own co-record of points in a playoff season by an Oil King of 19. He has 22 points in 16 games. “Knowing the bounces of Rexall Place boards and everything about it helps. That’s why we play the regular season – to get that home ice advantage in Game 7.”

St. Croix can’t wait for the WHL Final to start Friday.

“That seven game series against Portland last year was the best experience of my life and lifting that Cup was the coolest thing I’ve ever done. To get a chance to do it again, especially against Portland is going to be pretty special.”

“It was one heckuva seventh game,” said Oil Kings Head Coach Derek Laxdal. “Give Calgary credit, they came out and pushed us hard in the third period and L-B (Laurent Brossoit) was outstanding. It was a solid win.”

“There’s a lot of nervous kids out there playing hard for Game 7 to move on to the final and I know our kids really deserved it.”

Oil Kings goalie Laurent Brossoit recorded 26 saves and had 2 shutouts in the series. He now has 5 shutouts in the post-season which is one shy of a WHL Playoff record.
