May 1, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – Four days until the Highlanders FC kick-off at Royal Athletic Park vs. the Kitsap Pumas on May 4th.
One person who is perhaps a bit more prepared than most is Jordie Hughes. This is because Hughes is the last remaining member of the “original six” only player to have taken to the pitch for the Highlanders in each of their last four seasons.
To tie in to the general theme of the article, Jordie also had four fouls last season, four yellow cards in his Highlanders’ career and four assists in the 2010 season but the four seasons played by him are what really impress.
Jordie has been a constant for the Highlanders franchise and together, with his brother, Tyler, has been part of the core the team’s been able to build off of.
Striker Craig Gorman describes Jordie as “one of the funniest guys on the team,” and says that he “brings a lot of experience to the squad and has a very dangerous attacking vision. He can shoot or make the pass if need be.”
The midfielder, who stands 5’10” and weighs 175 pounds, has played in 48 games as a Highlander and has started 45 of those. In those 48 games he has tallied 20 goals and 9 assists while registering 86 shots. In 2011 He was a Western Conference PDL All-Star.
In his teen years Jordie represented British Columbia as part of the provincial team. Hughes has also played for the Charleston Battery in the USL and had a very successful collegiate career at Coastal Carolina University. Between the years 2002 and 2005 he put up 47 goals at Coastal Carolina and in his last year there was named All-American Team.
Jordie’s a player who is capable of boosting team morale through wit or skill; a crucial part of a Highlanders team who are now in better position than they have been in franchise history. He can pass, shoot and defend making him a big presence in the midfield.
Only four days left before fans get to see Jordie and the rest of the Highlanders in action at Royal Athletic Park. Kick-off’s at 5pm. There’s pre-game party hosted by Heineken at the Strathcona Hotel, 1pm, so don’t miss out!
