OTTAWA – The 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Swimming Trials competition and Mary-Sophie Harvey of Trois-Rivières,Que., were among the big winners at the recent Gala Sports Québec.
The Olympic and Paralympic Swimming Trials was named the top Canadian event in the province. It was held from March 27 to April 1, 2012 at the Olympic Park Pool in Montreal. Nearly 900 athletes competed at the trials which determined Canada’s teams for the Olympic and Paralympic Games held in London.
The competition brought more than $6 million in economic benefits to Montreal. It attracted more than 20,000 spectators, 600 volunteers and 80 media outlets from across Canada. Most of the finals were carried live across Canada on Sportsnet.
Harvey was named the top female athlete at the provincial level. In her age group she is ranked first in 10 events in Canada (the 100- and 200-m freestyle; the 50-m backstroke, the 50-, 100- and 200-m breaststroke, the 100- and 200-m butterfly and the 200- and 400-m individual medley.
She competed as a 12-year-old at the Olympic trials and ended the year with nine gold medals at a provincial meet.
