Author, professor Dr. E. Paul Zehr announced as 6th Annual Vikes Championship Breakfast keynote speaker

May 2, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – Canadian professor of kinesiology and neuroscience at the University of Victoria, Dr. E. Paul Zehr, is set to be the keynote speaker for the 6th Annual Vikes Championship Breakfast on Oct. 1, 2013.

“I am very excited to be a part of this event and support the Vikes,” said Zehr, who was a guest at last year’s Vikes Championship Breakfast. “The Vikes and what they represent are an important part of our community and I am keen to help the Vikes programs and student-athletes in any way I can.”

Zehr completed his undergraduate and Master’s degrees at McMaster University in kinesiology and went on to the University of Alberta where he completed his Ph.D. in neuroscience. Zehr spent time as a professor at the University of Alberta until 2002 and then moved to Victoria.

At UVic, Zehr continued as an assistant professor and over the past 10 years has grown to now lead the Rehabilitation Neuroscience Laboratory on campus, and is a professor of neuroscience and kinesiology in the School of Exercise Science, Physical, and Health Education and the Division of Medical Sciences. He is also Director of the Centre for Biomedical Research at UVic.

Zehr is well known for his work in neural control of movement and rehabilitation after a stroke or spinal cord injury. His research work combined with his passion for martial arts and science communication helped spark his career as an author. Zehr wrote the popular science books Becoming Batman, published in 2008, Inventing Iron Man, published in 2011, and the forthcoming Project Batgirl appearing in 2014.

As a martial arts teacher of the martial arts, Zehr has combined his interest in science and his community involvement to become a knowledgeable and entertaining public speaker for a variety of audiences. In 2012, Zehr spoke at the TEDx Edmonton event that was themed “Ideas Worth Spreading.” Zehr’s talk titled “The Superhero in You”highlighted reaching human achievement and understanding an individual’s potential.

“As a passionate supporter of our Vikes and an accomplished scholar, author and speaker, we are fortunate to have Dr. Paul Zehr agree to be our keynote speaker at our 6thannual Vikes Championship Breakfast,” said Clint Hamilton, director of Vikes Athletics and Recreation. “I have no doubt that Paul will bring an inspiring message on human potential-one that will captivate and challenge all in attendance.”

The Vikes Championship Breakfast will take place on Tuesday, October 1 from 7:15-8:45 a.m. in the McKinnon gymnasium. This event solely supports Vikes Athletics and the student-athletes. To date, the Vikes Championship Breakfast has raised nearly $1.5 million dollars, helping student-athletes realize success in the classroom and on the field of competition.
