May 4, 2013, Vancouver, BC (ISN) – The first round of 2013 BC Rugby provincial club finals wrapped up on Saturday at Vancouver’s Brockton Oval with Kamloops Rugby Club lifting the Division One Karen Moore Cup and United Rugby Club taking the Division Two Ged Griffith’s Cup.

Across the province, 10 semifinals were underway as teams jockeyed for berths into the remaining provincial finals set for Saturday, May 11th. (Full Saturday scoreboard provided below)

Women’s Division One – Karen Moore Cup

Kamloops Rugby Club 34, Nanaimo Hornets 10

Kamloops Rugby Club capped off a perfect season with a convincing 34-10 win over the Nanaimo Hornets in the Big Kahuna Women’s Division One Provincial Final. The Kamloops Raiders led from start to finish and set the tone early on through a try by winger Erin Connelly-Reed as she sliced through the defence for the score. Jess Oldenburg provided the extras and Kamloops were ahead 7-0.

Kamloops would lead 24-0 at the half through tries from Danielle Plysiuk and Kaley Nokleby along with two conversions and a penalty from Oldenburg.

In the second frame Nanaimo’s pace saw them stretch Kamloops’ defence thin on two occasions as Angela Buick would record a brace of well-worked expansive team tries. That was all the Island side could muster, however, as additional Kamloops tries from Nokleby and Plysiuk saw them take the final 34-10.

“We’ve had some great seasons and been in the finals a few times now, but this is the first time that we’ve finally won the title. It’s just so great for our club to have an undefeated season,” said Kamloops captain Kelsey Winter. “Nanaimo were a strong team and that was a great battle.”

Women’s Division Two – Ged Griffith’s Cup

United Rugby Club 22, Ridge Meadows Bruins 17

In an all-Fraser Valley provincial championship, United Rugby Club’s Stephanie Ruelas broke through for a game-winning try in the final minutes to see her side down the previously undefeated Ridge Meadows Bruins by a score of 22-17.

United opened the scoring through a Samantha Maddalozzo try 12 minutes in and with a conversion from Katherine Siemans jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Ridge Meadows responded quickly with a score from Sophie Towne but the conversion was wide and they trailed 7-5.

United would get two more tries from Trixie Pacis and Ruelas in the second half. Ridge Meadows found themselves on the back foot for much of the match but their offence came to life and responded with their own tries just minutes after United’s tallies.

Ridge Meadows would score through a Michelle Kieselbach try and their third was scored and converted by Bri Railian to tie the game at 17-17. As the final appeared to be headed for over time, United’s Ruelas broke through again to take the match 22-17.
