May 6, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – Former University of Victoria Vikes team captain Clifford Childs and University of Guelph Gryphon Rachel Cliff of Vancouver, will be racing Saturday, May 11th at The Q’s Victoria Run Series in an attempt to qualify for the World University Games Championships (FISU) in the 5000m distance.

The FISU Championships take place from July 6th to July 12th 2013 in Kazan, Russia. Childs has little time to qualify, deadline is May 19th. “Looking forward to running the first meet of The Q’s Victoria Run Series and making a serious effort to achieve standard,” said Childs.

The FISU qualification standard is 14:00. Childs has run as fast as 14:36 at the Victoria Track Classic on June 13th 2012, which is part of the National Track League. He will be paced by another former Vike and IAAF World Track and Field Championships competitor Geoff Martinson. Martinson’s personal best at the distance is 13:43.45; it won’t be an easy task. “I’m hoping to help give Cliff a great opportunity to qualify for FISU. I have no doubt that with cooperating weather conditions, Cliff will hit his mark and we’ll have Victoria’s fastest 5km of the summer,” said Martinson.

The Q’s Victoria Run Series track meet takes place at the Jack Wallace Memorial Track at Oak Bay High School. The first race on the evening schedule goes at 6:30 PM sharp. Other races include community and competitive divisions in the 800m, 1500m and 5000m distances. “The meet is for all levels of runners. This is a wonderful opportunity for recreational runners to get up close and personal – unlike any other sporting event – to watch national-calibre athletes compete at a high level,” said Christopher Kelsall, series director.

Proceeds from The Q’s Victoria Run Series are directed to the Mustard Seed Food Bank. Non-perishable food items for spectators are suggested. The Q’s Victoria Run Series, formerly The Q’s Victoria Track Series is starting its fourth season. Volunteers are welcome.

Runners of all abilities can register and check-in until 6:00 PM on race day, Saturday, May 11th.
