May 9, 2013, Burnaby, BC (ISN) – The Simon Fraser University men’s soccer program has signed Chris Merriman (Nanaimo, BC) who will join the Clan this fall.
Merriman is a 5’10 defender who played last year with Vancouver Island University where he won a Canadian Collegiate Athletics Association Championship in 2010.
“We’re excited to add Chris to our program,” said Head Coach Alan Koch. “He brings great experience to our team and comes from a great footballing family.”
In addition to playing for VIU, Merriman plays club soccer for Victoria Highlanders FC and represented Canada with the under-17 team.
“SFU has the ability to win the NCAA Championship,” said Merriman. “Joining a team with this much potential is exciting for me. I believe I can make an impact this season not only on the pitch but off as well.”
At VIU, he played for his father Bill Merriman and at SFU he will be re-united with his brother James Merriman, who is an assistant coach on the SFU staff.
“I’m looking forward to working with my brother James again. We won a CCAA championship together in 2010 and I’m looking to replicate that experience at SFU. There’s no better place for footy than the top of Burnaby Mountain,” finished Merriman.
Merriman and the Clan will begin training camp in preparation for the 2013 season in August. More SFU men’s soccer signings will be announced in the coming days.
