May 8, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes are well-represented in the men’s soccer Premier Development League (PDL), part of the United Soccer League (USL), that will compete over the summer months.

The four-conference league will feature the Victoria Highlanders FC, who boast 10 Vikes from the 2012-13 season, as well as Whitecaps FC PDL, who will feature 2011 Canada West Rookie of the Year, Cam Hundal.


The USL Premier Development League is the top developmental men’s league in North America giving elite collegiate and residenct players a chacne to compete in high-level soccer. The league features 73 teams within four conferences across all of North America.

The Highlanders and ‘Caps are set to face each other May 17 in Vancouver at Swangard Stadium. Both teams are members of the Norhtwest Division in the Western Conference. In the opening weekend, on May 4, the Highlanders hosted and defeated Kitsap Pumas 3-0, with current Vike Thomas Mallette tallying the first goal, while forward Craig Gorman picked up an assist on the second.

As for the Whitecaps FC PDL team, they will host their first game of 2013 on May 10 against the Kitsap Pumas.

In addition to Gorman and Mallette, there are eight additional Vikes competing for the Victoria Highlanders including goalkeeper Elliot Mitrou, defender Gavin Barrett, midfielder Wesley Barrett, brothers Andrew and Adam Ravenhill, midfielder Craig Taylor, forward Sam Pretty, as well as midifleder Gareth Langdon. Amongst the 10, several were apart of the 2011 CIS men’s soccer national championship team including Mitrou, Gorman, Mallette, Taylor, Andrew Ravenhill and both Barrett brothers.

Left off that elite list of Vikes is midfield stand out Hundal, who was the spark that propelled the 2011 Vikes squad to CIS gold on home soil and was named the CIS tournament Most Valuable Player. Hundal returns to Whitecaps FC’s PDL roster for his second season and is no stranger to the program. The Terrace, B.C. native was part of the Whitecaps FC Residency program, along with UBC Thunderbirds standout Gagandeep Dosanjh.
