Edmonton’s Richard Funk wins two medals at Charlotte Grand Prix

May 10, 2013, Charotte (ISN) – World championship team member Richard Funk of Edmonton won the silver medal in the 50-m breaststroke and bronze in the 100-m breaststroke on Friday at the Charlotte Grand Prix swimming competition.

In the 50-m breaststroke, Mihail Alexandrov of Bulgaria took the gold in 27.71 seconds with Funk second in 28.11 and Jorge Murillo of Colombia third in 28.28.

Alexandrov also won the 100-m breaststroke in 1:01.00, Murillo was second in 1:01.72 and Funk third in 1:02.03.

There were three Canadian finalists in women’s competition: Samantha Cheverton of Pointe-Claire, Que., was fifth in the women’s 200-m freestyle while Marnie Oldershaw and Annie Harrison, both of Oakville, Ont., were sixth and seventh in the 400-m individual medley.

Funk and Cheverton are continuing their preparations for the FINA World Championships July 19 to August 4 in Barcelona,

Competition continues Saturday.
