May 12, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The Peninsula Coop Highlanders joined the men’s first team in the winning column Sunday afternoon, downing the Kamloops Heat 4-1 in their season-opening match at Tyndall Park.

The Highlanders dominated the opening half, with scoring coming from four different players.

Jaclyn Sawicki and Katie Kraeutner opened the scoring, tallying their goals before the match had reached the 15-minute mark. Jackie Harrison added to the lead followed by a successful conversion on a penalty shot by Liz Hansen. The Peninsula Coop Highlanders led 4-0 going into the half.

“I thought it was as good as we could have played,” said Peninsula Coop Highlanders Head Coach Dave Dew, “I knew they had a good game against the Whitecaps yesterday, I knew they had been down 4-0 at the half and that they wouldn’t quit today.”

Alanna Bekkering tallied in the second half for Kamloops, who put on increased pressure during the second half, forcing Highlanders goalkeeper Samantha Behm to make several large saves and holding the Highlanders scoreless through the final half.

“We made a lot of changes in the second half, we were checking out some of the players and we had two youth players playing at the end there,” said Dew. “When you make those changes it kind of takes the steam out ofyou.”

Although held scoreless, Dew believes the score didn’t necessarily reflect his teams effort.

“To be fair I thought we were unfortunate to not earn one in the second, a couple of the girls were disappointed with their finishing, the build-up was really good, just the final ball wasn’t. “

The team will now turn their focus to next weeks upcoming match against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

“Next week will be a tougher test,” said Dew, “Vancouver was 4-2 in yesterday’s game, so that tells me that our teams are on the same page.”
