May 17, 2013, Langley, BC (ISN) – The Trinity Western men’s volleyball program will be well-represented at this year’s FISU Games as four former Spartans and one current player were named to Canada’s 18-member roster for the Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia July 4-19.

Current Spartan middle Lucas Van Berkel (Edmonton), who will enter his fifth year with TWU this fall, will be joined by recent alumni Steven Marshall (Abbotsford, B.C., graduated 2013), Dan Jansen Van Doorn (Langley, 2013), Rudy Verhoeff (Calgary, 2012) and Marc Howatson (Victoria, 2012) on the training roster.

Of the 18 players named to the initial roster, 12 will travel to compete in Kazan.

For Verhoeff and Howatson, this will be their second opportunity to represent Canada at the FISU Games after they helped Canada to a fourth place finish at the 2011 Universiade in Shenzhen, China. Van Berkel, Jansen Van Doorn and Verhoeff all trained with Canada’s Senior B team last summer.

While Verhoeff was selected as part of the initial 18-member roster, he is currently playing with Canada’s Senior A team that is competing in the FIVB World League. He made his Senior A debut Thursday in an exhibition match against Turkey, which Canada won 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 25-19, 16-25,15-12).

Trinity Western’s quintet is the largest contingent from any university on the men’s volleyball roster. Manitoba and Calgary each had three players named to the roster.

The Spartans now have nine current or former athletes who could be in Russia this summer after former TWU women’s soccer players Kristen Funk (Calgary, 2013) and Jilian Dietrich (Calgary, 2013) will play alongside current Spartans Colleen Webber (Calgary) and Natalie Boyd (Surrey, B.C.) with Canada’s women’s soccer team.

Volleyball Canada announced its men’s national B team following a selection camp which took place at the national training centre in Gatineau, Que., from May 9-13.

A total of 49 players battled for positions under head coach Larry McKay and his assistants Steve Leknois and Tilen Kozamernik.

The team will immediately start preparing for the Games at the national training centre in Gatineau.
