May 18, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – It was a dominant team performance by the Intermediate Shamrocks Saturday as they rolled over the visiting Delta Islanders 16-1.
Starting goaltender for the Rocks was Trace Birley and he had a shutout going until the 15:17 mark of period 3 after his teammates staked him to period leads of 5-0 and 13-0. At the other end of the floor it was Mark Paterson facing what proved to be a veritable shooting gallery.

It was 3-0 Victoria by the 3:51 mark of the opening frame as Matt Hamilton scored at 2:32 on a hard shot from the dotted line. Jamie Jensen followed up at 3:04 and Nate Wade got in close at 3:51. The next goal didn’t come until 16:16 when Jensen notched his second on the power play, using a quick stick from the side of the crease to open up the 4-goal lead. Hamilton then picked up his second, cutting across right in front of the net to find twine at 17:57.

The second period saw the Shamrocks outshoot Delta by a 23-7 margin as they scored 8 times, 3 of those coming with the man advantage. A couple of those came on some fast breaks from the back end as Connor Leies scored a beautiful unassisted tally at 7:47 after intercepting a Delta pass and going coast to coast. He added another on a similar breakaway a few minutes later. Other goals came from Darrin Wilson, McLean Chiquen, Wade with two more and Graham Winship with a pair. .After 40 minutes that made it 13-0 for the home team.

Delta made a goaltending switch to start period 3 with Luke Oliver going in but Victoria picked up a couple more early as Wade scored his fourth of the contest at 6:01 and Nick Preston added another at 7:42. The Rocks ran into some penalty trouble with a double minor assessed at 9:05 which then overlapped with an additional minor at 12:11 but the penalty killers did a yeoman job ragging the ball, in particular Wilson, Preston, Hamilton and Jordan Green. It was after that period of time that Delta finally got on the board, Josh Kelly getting the ball behind Birley after the goaltender got a piece of it. The Rocks added one more at 17:43, off the stick of Wilson to make the final 16-1.

Lots of goals, lots of points by lots of players as it was a total team effort by the boys in green. Unofficially, Nate Wade had 4 goals, Matt Hamilton, Graham Winship, Connor Leies, Jamie Jensen and Darrin Wilson each chipped in a pair with Wilson adding 4 helpers. Singles came from Nick Preston and McLean Chicquen who each contributed 2 assists. Brock Thompson-Marshall came up with 4 assists and Jordan Green 3 helpers.

Final shots on goal were approximately 54-23 so Birley not as busy as his counterpart but very seldom does a goaltender get that close to a shutout (the ‘s’ word). It almost happened today. Next action for the Intermediate Shamrocks is next Saturday at Bear Mountain Arena when they will host the Maple Ridge Burrards at 1:30 pm.
