The battle happens at Foote Field Stadium between 10:30 AM – 1:30 PM.
Warren Weir surprised crowds when he set a personal best of 19.84 at the London Olympic Games, earning him the bronze medal and completing a Jamaican sweep in the 200m behind Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake. On Saturday, May 18, he won gold at the Shanghai Diamond League meet, with a time of 20.18.
“Competing in Edmonton will be my first chance to run in Canada,” says Weir. “I heard a lot about the event from Yohan, and I’m excited to join him there this year.”
Jared Connaughton, whose personal best is 20.30 in the 200m was also a member of the 4x100m relay team in London. Connaughton recently won the Seiko Golden Grand Prix 2013 in Tokyo, Japan with a time of 20.70. Tremaine Harris’ personal best is 20.22, the third fastest time in Canadian history. The London Olympic Games marked the 20-year old’s Olympic debut. Harris is now freshly back from the Brazilian Athletics Tour.
“There is an excellent chance we’ll set some records with this event,” says Peter Ogilvie, Meet Director and Executive Director of Athletics Alberta. “Nobody has broken the 20-second barrier on Canadian soil, so we’re really excited to see what happens.”
The fastest time in Canada was 20.03, set by Greece’s Konstadinos Kedéris at the 2001 IAAF World Championships in Athletics in Edmonton. The fastest time by a Canadian is 20.17, set by Atlee Mahorn in 1991. Harris and Connaughton are ranked as the 3rd and 4th fastest Canadians in history.
Weir, Connaughton and Harris, along with many other World Champions and Olympic medalists, will meet at Foote Field Stadium on June 29 for the third of five stops in the 2013 National Track League series.
