May 23, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The Peninsula Co-op Highlanders will be looking to win their second game of the Pacific Coast Soccer League season when they embark on a two-game road trip this weekend.

Following last Monday’s loss, Head Coach Dave Dew is optimistic following practices this week

“Practices were good, really good,” says Dew. “The atmosphere was positive and players were feeling good about themselves. We worked on decision making, the weight of the pass, when to pressure, when not to, possession and all those aspects of the game.”

The Highlanders first test will see them face the Okanagan FC, a team that has compiled one win and one draw in the young PCSL season. The team has put up seven goals in their first two contests, with Melanie Shannon and Ashlee Davison leading the team with two goals each. The match takes place at 2pm at UBC Okanagan.

“They’ll be well organized,” says Dew. “Just like Kamloops they have a lot college players, and they’ll have some of their best recruits in the game. They’ll be in the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sports) program in a year, they’re an upcoming program. Claire Paterson is also a very good coach, I’ve evaluated and worked beside her in the past.”

Following Saturday’s match, the women will head to Kamloops looking to win their second match against the Heat this season. Their previous match against the Heat—a 4-1 season-opening victory, saw the offence spread out amongst four different Highlanders. Katie Kraeutner, Liz Hansen, Jaclyn Sawicki and Jackie Harrison all netted goals, while PACWEST Player Of The Year Alanna Bekkering scored on a penalty kick for the Heat. Kamloops has put up a record of one win and two losses in their season, tallying six total goals total throughout the three contests. Alanna Bekkering and Marlie Rittinger lead their squad with two goals each.

“We’ll be looking for a full 90-minutes for ourselves this time around against Kamloops,” says Dew.

The Sunday match will take place at 12pm at Hillside Park. For more information, please visit www.victoriahighlandersfc.com
