Vikes women improve to eighth in round two of NAIA championship

May 23, 2013, Victoria, BC (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes women’s golf team improved to eighth in the team standings after round two at the 2013 NAIA women’s golf championship hosted at the Wilderness Ridge Golf Club in Lincoln, Neb.

The Vikes women improved by 16 strokes to finish with a round two score of 310 (+60).

“The girls really stepped it up today and earned the fifth best score of the day,” said Vikes women’s golf head coach Bryan Carbery. “The weather still played a large factor as the wind was still really intense and it was very cold.”

Brynn Tomie led the Vikes on day two and is currently tied for 20th with a 12-over 156 (81-75) score. Defending NAIA champion Megan Woodland improved her day two score by two strokes to finish 12-over 156 (79-77) and is also tied for 20th.

“Megan is not hitting the ball as well as I’m sure she would like to but is still staying very competitive,” added Carbery. “The girls will all have to continue to compete over the next two days. It was great to see Emily [Nicol] and Brynn playing well and we look forwarding to seeing our group continue moving upwards.”

Emily Nicol finished her two rounds with a 15-over 159 (83-76) score. The seven stroke improvement bumped Nicol from 80th to 41st in the overall charts.

Michaela Misener improved by one stroke to finish 21-over 165 (83-82) to finish tied for 72nd, while Michaela Abey is tied for 108th wit ha score of 29-over 173 (84-89).

Jessica Schiele of Oklahoma City helped her team move to first place with a team score of 39-over 615 (310-305), while Cal State-San Marcos also share the top of the leader board with the exact same team score.

Schiele tied the national championship record for the lowest score by shooting (34-34) a 68.

The Vikes will tee off for their third round tomorrow, May 23, with their fourth and final round taking place on May 24.
