May 23, 2013, Ottawa, ON (ISN) – The 22U National Club Championships in men’s and women’s water polo will be held this Friday to Sunday (May 24-26) at the Centre sportif in Gatineau, Quebec (850 Blvd de la Gappe).
The competition is co-hosted by Capital Wave Water Polo Club and Club de water-polo de Gatineau on behalf of Water Polo Canada. These are the last two events of the 2013 National Club Championship season which began on March 29.
The men’s event has been held since 1927 (Montreal Amateur Athletic Association was the first champion). Montreal-based CAMO won the last event in 2011 (the event was not held for the men in 2012), breaking Dollard Water Polo’s five year stranglehold on the title.
Teams entered this year are CAMO, Team Saskatchewan, Laval Tritons and two entries from Dollard Water Polo.
Laval faces Saskatchewan in the men’s opening match on Friday at 10:30 a.m., and round robin action continues through Saturday. The playoffs are Sunday with the bronze medal match at 1 p.m. and the final at 2:20 p.m.
On the women’s side, the defending champions are the Calgary Renegades who won 13-4 against Dollard in last year’s championship game for their first 22U national title. Both teams will participate again this year along with CAMO, Saskatchewan and Ottawa’s Capital Wave.
The women’s tournament starts on Friday at 7:40 a.m. with Dollard against CAMO. The round robin continues through Saturday. The third place match is Sunday at 10 a.m. followed by the final at 11:20 a.m.
Distinguished guests will include the mayor of Gatineau Mr. Marc Bureau (opening ceremonies and awards ceremonies). Former national team member and recent Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame inductee Heather Gifford-Seaman will also be in attendance at the opening ceremonies.
